Catechism as a Faith Formation Tool

Knowing and loving God is what matters most. In Deuteronomy 6:4–9, we’re reminded to love God “with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your might.” This call is so central that it’s meant to shape our everyday lives—written on our hearts and passed on diligently to our children. A life with God—being with Jesus, becoming like Him, and living for Him—is truly the most abundant life.

As parents and caregivers, many of us long to help our kids see that truth. At Trinity, we’ve created Formative Families as a space to pause, reflect, and imagine what a Way of Life with God can look like in the home. This year, we are focusing on the practices of Scripture and Prayer, exploring how these rhythms shape faith over time.

At our next Formative Families gathering on May 17, we’ll focus on Scripture memory and growing in our understanding of catechism. Together, we’ll consider how hiding God’s Word in our hearts and forming our kids through simple, repeated truths can take root in everyday life.

What Is Catechism?

Catechism is a method of teaching biblical truth through questions and answers. The word comes from the Greek katecheo, meaning “to instruct” or “to teach orally.” Throughout church history, many Christian traditions have used catechisms to help people learn and remember the core truths of Scripture—the gospel, doctrine, and the story of God.

At Trinity, we’ve begun using The New City Catechism in both Trinity Kids and Trinity Youth. It is organized into three parts:

  • Part 1: God, Creation & Fall, Law

  • Part 2: Christ, Redemption, Grace

  • Part 3: Spirit, Restoration, Growing in Grace

Why Catechism?

Catechism doesn’t replace Scripture—it supports it. It helps us meditate on God’s Word, understand it, and communicate it clearly. It also gives kids (and adults) a shared language for talking about God and their faith. Over time, these truths begin to take root in their hearts and minds.

Children are constantly learning and making sense of the world around them. Catechism helps build a biblical framework, equipping them to interpret their experiences through the truth of Scripture. It lays a foundation that they will grow into over time.

I’ve especially appreciated how Kathy Keller describes it:

“You are laying kindling and the logs in the fireplace, so that when the spark of the Holy Spirit ignites your child’s heart, there will be a steady, mature blaze.”

Even for those of us who feel unsure about memorization, catechism offers a simple, steady way to plant seeds of truth. As kids learn these big truths, they are storing up knowledge that God can use in powerful ways.

A Shared Invitation

As we faithfully show our kids that knowing and loving God matters most, we can trust that He is at work. As parents and caregivers, we have the incredible privilege of partnering with God—cultivating the soil of our children’s hearts and planting seeds of faith. What a joy it is to point our kids to the beauty of Jesus and His transforming love and amazing grace.

It’s a beautiful and humbling responsibility—and we don’t do it alone.

We hope you’ll join us on May 17 as we continue learning together. You can sign up HERE.
